A Few of My Favourite Modern Authors

We do a lot of book reviews in this space, because we recognize the value in shouting other professionals in our craft. And because we read as much as we can to entertain ourselves, and also to grow in our craft.

That being said, there are a few authors with whom I’d really love to sit down and grab a coffee. I’m sure there are so many I’ve yet to discover but for now, here are a few of my top picks.

Before I go into my list, you should know that I feel quite picky about what I would deem good writing.

That being said, I’m not so into snobby writers or authors who write over the heads of the general populace and I’m not above reading me some good upmarket fiction.

Without further ado, here are some of authors I respect and admire the most.

For example, I love both Anthony Doerr and Sue Monk Kidd. I love the way they write. (Clearly everyone loves the way Anthony writes, Mr. Pulitzer prize.) And Oprah is on my side about Ms. Kidd. Seriously, if you haven’t read their books, you must!

Garth Stein. Mr. Stein-The Art of Racing in the Rain was pure magic. I can’t wait to meet you.

Jodi Picoult. Jodi and I go a long ways back. I’ve been reading her since before My Sister’s Keeper Days. (I’ve been in the mood to re-read that, BTW.) Jodi-I definitely love some of your books more than other ones, but I admire so much the span and depth of your writing.

Carol Rifka Brunt. Carol, Carol. I love (love, love!)  Tell the Wolves I’m Home. It is usually the first book I recommend to anyone who is looking for a good read. I can’t say enough about the beauty of this book. My sister also holds this as her favourite book of all time.

Come have coffee with me? It’s my treat.

We can text a photo to my sister and make her jealous.

Paula McLain. I thought about The Paris Wife for days (weeks?) after I read it. So many emotions. I think leaving a lingering sense of loss with one’s audience is both powerful and impressive.

I have so many questions for you and would love to hear more about the process of writing this book from your side.

Who are your favourite modern authors and why?
