How To Title Your Novel

Or- How to Succeed at Titling Your Novel Without Dying.

Maybe you are the kind of person who can both write and title your book effortlessly (if so, we are immediately suspicious.)

I will say, we are not those kinds of people.

When it came to titling our first book, the conversation went a lot like this:

Over the course of months (and months and months), as we continued to brainstorm, our list came together and looked a lot like this:

  1. They Came out to Play
  2. Pink Elephants
  3. Where Elephants Roam
  4. These Wild Ones
  5. The Mad Swirl
  6. Pink Elephant Parade
  7. The Elephants are Home
  8. All Fall Down
  9. Until They Dance
  10. Rainbow House

Which title do you like best? (As you can see, we like the word ‘elephants’ A LOT.) And who wouldn’t?!

They’re so cute and cuddly.

As a matter of fact, we still often refer to our first novel as “Elephants.”

It wasn’t until we were nearing one of our last edits of Remember Us that we threw Remember Us into the conversation and both felt like it was the fit we’d been missing.

I’m not sure how we transitioned between the two, but I assure you it was a long journey.

So the bottom line is, don’t give up as you’re working on titling your book (or novella or blog)-keep trying out different fits until you find the one that’s best for you. Ask friends. Drink wine. Keep lists.

It will be worth it in the end, we promise.

  1. If you choose an elephant one, “The Elephants are Home” for some reason stands out to me. If not, I really like the “These Wild Ones.” 🙂 Loves –
